Church needs to move with the masses

MORE Sunday evening masses will attract young people and families back to the church, Catholic Archbishop Philip Wilson believes.

Speaking to The Advertiser to mark 10 years as head of the Adelaide Archdiocese, Archbishop Wilson said social patterns had changed dramatically over the past 30 years and the church needed to adapt in order to grow.

The most popular mass at the cathedral is now at 6pm on a Sunday, compared with the Saturday night vigil masses that were in vogue when he was ordained in 1975.

"I have been saying to our people that I think with the way the weekend works now, we should have as many masses as we can on Sunday nights," Archbishop Wilson said.

"I think if we made more masses available on Sunday nights, it would attract more younger people and it would also fit in with families, because on the weekend many families are away Saturdays and Sundays with sport."    More
