Apart from the fact they're all a bit twisty and pervy, I can't
imagine why conservatives of any shade wouldn't get, ahem, behind gay
marriage. In fact, I'm not sure why they wouldn't legislate to make it
compulsory.
Even Tony Abbott seems to be flirting with the idea, if his reaction the ALP's policy change last week means anything. After Labor wrenched itself through a series of painful contortions to get to a position where the party would allow a conscience vote on gay marriage, Abbott surprised me, and probably George Pell, by repeatedly reminding anyone who asked that the Liberal Party didn't expel anyone for crossing the floor.
Does that mean he won't punish any of his troops who vote with a majority of ALP members to create a new institution, same-sex marriage? Or is he just weaselling out of committing to anything? Knowing he can safely rely on the punishers and straighteners in his party to exact revenge on anybody inclined to actually follow through on the Liberal belief that the state should play as small a role in the lives of individuals as possible?
