The Victorians would have built the £50bn Thames airport. So why won't we?

Until about 1940, Britain had Europe’s fastest trains. But in a change to the advertised service, it is now home to the slowest. Our airports snake with queues, our sewers are close to capacity, and our roads are studded with potholes.

There was a time when Britain’s infrastructure was envied across the globe. 

Our railways, roads and sewers (unpleasant, but certainly an engineering marvel) put us well ahead of our European neighbours in the race to industrialise.    Full Read
