A WOMAN demanded a WA council pay
for her $900 sunglasses after claiming a magpie swooped on the designer
eyewear resting on her head and flew away with the Gucci shades.
While falls and accidents on dodgy footpaths and roads were the top targets for public liability payouts, the magpie case was one of the more bizarre compensation claims rejected by Local Government Insurance Services.
Other cases in the past year included a $1000 claim from a homeowner after his neighbour's four goats escaped and devoured his prized garden and a $130 demand for professionally removing parking inspector chalk marks from car tyres.
Both were denied, but the LGIS said valuable time was being wasted by investigators playing private detectives for "frivolous" swindles. Full Read
