The hunt for Kony: US troops chill out in the bush

Six months ago the US sent an elite unit to hunt down guerrilla leader Joseph Kony. They've not met Kony’s forces yet – they mostly stay holed up in their camps. But they are trying their best to collect local rumors that could help Ugandan troops. The 100 American troops on location rarely leave the safety of their camps, which are shielded by barbed wire and surveillance systems. They already have five such heavily-guarded camps in the region – in South Sudan, Congo, the Central African Republic, and two in Uganda. The only help the veteran Green Berets provide to their African colleagues is technical advice and intelligence about the Lord’s Resistance Army's possible locations. Although the US forces are, as always, well-armed, they are only permitted to shoot in self-defense. In such conditions, US soldiers prefer to stay away from the action in unfamiliar territory.            Read More

Stabbed to death in her hair salon: Former detective questioned over high street attack on wife who had walked out on him

A former detective was arrested yesterday for allegedly stabbing his hairdresser wife to death in her salon. Natalie Esack, in her 30s, is thought to have left her husband of eight years Ivan Esack around a month ago, taking her pets with her as she moved out. Staff at neighbouring businesses said they heard a terrifying scream ring out from her shop yesterday morning and saw two other hairdressers running into the street. A knife was recovered from the scene in the High Street in Ashford, Kent, and her ex-partner, now a football agent, was later arrested at the couple’s former three-bedroomed home a few miles away. Neighbours there said Mrs Esack had last been seen around a month ago, and had taken her pet cats and dog with her when she left.         More

VANCOUVER — A female hang-glider, who detached from a tandem flight shortly after launch near Agassiz, B.C., on Saturday, tried desperately to cling to the pilot’s feet before falling 300 metres to her death. Jason Warner, safety officer for the Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association of Canada , said the pilot knew almost immediately something was wrong after the pair launched off the popular Mount Woodside just before noon. He tried to grab the 27-year-old woman, identified as Lenami Godinez, and sought to hold on to the straps of her harness but she slid out of his grasp, grabbing his feet in a last-ditch attempt to hang on. Godinez’s body was found by searchers about seven hours later, about 20 metres from one of the pilot’s shoes. “(The pilot) realized right away from takeoff that something was wrong and he tried to grab her,” Warner said. “The shoe ended up being a clue to finding her.”         More Read

Web War II: What a future cyberwar will look like

How might the blitzkrieg of the future arrive? By air strike? An invading army? In a terrorist's suitcase? In fact it could be coming down the line to a computer near you.  Operation Locked Shields, an international military exercise held last month, was not exactly your usual game of soldiers. It involves no loud bangs or bullets, no tanks, aircraft or camouflage face-paint. Its troops rarely even left their control room, deep within a high security military base in Estonia.   These people represent a new kind of combatant - the cyber warrior. One team of IT specialists taking part in Locked Shields, were detailed to attack nine other teams, located all over Europe. At their terminals in the Nato Co-operative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, they cooked up viruses, worms, Trojan Horses and other internet attacks, to hijack and extract data from the computers of their pretend enemies.         ...

Bin Laden documents to be published for public to see

On the eve of the first anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden, White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan said today that documents recovered from bin Laden's compound in Pakistan show that he was dour about the future of al-Qaeda. In a speech at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, Brennan said some of these documents will be published online by West Point's Combating Terrorism Center this week for the public to see for itself. Brennan said that bin Laden lamented low morale among recruits and that the terror organization was teetering from "disaster to disaster." "For example, bin Laden worried about — and I quote — 'the rise of lower leaders who are not as experienced,' and this would lead to the repeat of mistakes," Brennan said.        More Read

Manchester City v Manchester United: world's gaze focused on a tale of the unexpected at the Etihad Stadium

All the strengths of English football will be on display from bursts of technique to endless tribalism. There will be the two impassioned supports, filling the air with chants, including some that would make Roy “Chubby” Brown blush. If Manchester City score, there will be a mass Poznan, the reverse line-dancing borrowed from Poland as they chase a first title in 44 years. If Manchester United score, there will be wild scenes of celebration, their followers knowing that a point or more takes them a stride closer to a 20th title. Such is the interest that the men with bulging satchels believe it will be their busiest ever match with £50 million gambled. There will be the entertainers, the ball-users who spread sunshine across the landscape of English football. The hosts will lay on the darting dribbles of David Silva, the predator’s stealth of Sergio Agüero and the muscling runs of Yaya Touré. The visitors will hit back with the to...

Roy Hodgson for England is a shock choice and maybe a wrong one

At some point the Football Association is going to have to offer a plausible explanation about why it has decided Roy Hodgson has better credentials than Harry Redknapp to lift and invigorate this England squad, and then at least it should become easier to make sense of its thinking and understand the processes involved. Maybe it has been influenced by the way Tottenham have lost their way since the middle of February. Redknapp himself has described it as a "disastrous" run. His team had dropped out of the Champions League places before Sunday's win against Blackburn Rovers. They have won only two of their last 10 league fixtures and the injustice of Juan Mata's "goal" during their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley only partially detracted from the four other legitimate ones. Or could it be that everyone got it wildly wrong and saw something that was just not there when Redknapp walked free from Southwark crown court and, within hours, Fabio...

The Legendary Paul Ryan

T he implosion of the Newt Gingrich presidential campaign—the first implosion, before the weird resurrection and inevitable second implosion—came because he used four words: right-wing social engineering. He used the phrase, last May, to describe the Republican budget designed by GOP icon Paul Ryan. It was as if he had urinated on Ronald Reagan’s grave. Party leaders rounded on him. In Iowa, an angry voter cornered him and fumed, in a video captured by Fox News that quickly went viral, “What you did to Paul Ryan was unforgivable … You’re an embarrassment.” Gingrich quickly apologized to Ryan, pledged his fealty to the document, and then, lending his confession an extracted-at-NKVD-gunpoint flavor, announced, “Any ad which quotes what I said on Sunday is a falsehood.” It was no use: Despite years of diligent service, his support among Republicans collapsed, his fellow partisans holding him in the low regard ordinarily reserved for liberals. ...

Religion & Brain: Belief Decreases With Analytical Thinking, Study Shows

Many people with religious convictions feel that their faith is rock solid. But a new study finds that prompting people to engage in analytical thinking can cause their religious beliefs to waver, if only a little. Researchers say the findings have potentially significant implications for understanding the cognitive underpinnings of religion. Psychologists often carve thinking into two broad categories: intuitive thinking, which is fast and effortless (instantly knowing whether someone is angry or sad from the look on her face, for example); and analytic thinking, which is slower and more deliberate (and used for solving math problems and other tricky tasks). Both kinds of thinking have their strengths and weaknesses, and they often seem to interfere with one another. "Recently there's been an emerging consensus among [researchers] … that a lot of religious beliefs are grounded in intuitive processes," says Will Gervais, a graduate student at the Uni...

A scorned dentist is facing jail time after surgically removing all of her ex-boyfriend's teeth after he dumped her, authorities in London said. As America's Waistline Expands, Costs Soar

* $190 billion a year in excess medical spending * Many costs borne by non-obese, as in higher insurance premiums * Anti-obesity campaigners say highlighting costs should spur policy changes By Sharon Begley NEW YORK, April 30 (Reuters) - U.S. hospitals are ripping out wall-mounted toilets and replacing them with floor models to better support obese patients. The Federal Transit Administration wants buses to be tested for the impact of heavier riders on steering and braking. Cars are burning nearly a billion gallons of gasoline more a year than if passengers weighed what they did in 1960. The nation's rising rate of obesity has been well-chronicled. But businesses, governments and individuals are only now coming to grips with the costs of those extra pounds, many of which are even greater than believed only a few years ago: The additional medical spending due to obesity is doub...
