The oldest protester at the TUC’s ‘Manchester March for the
Alternative’ this year was 93-year-old Betty, who rode a sign-bearing
mobility scooter explaining, “It’s the system, stupid.”
She was, perhaps, an unusual sight. Be thankful she was there: political activism is increasingly the reserve of the recently adult and for any protest to claim representativeness – or at least representativeness beyond the roll call of a Sammy Smith pub – it desperately needs the likes of Manchester Council’s elderly ‘Women of the Year.’ More Read
