Wootton Bassett receives Royal title

WOOTTON Bassett is celebrating its new Royal status today after being recognised for its role in remembering our fallen war heroes.

In a glittering ceremony the Princess Royal delivered the rare award of the Letters Patent for the Queen to make the name change to Royal Wootton Bassett official.

It is the first time in over a hundred years the honour has been bestowed on any town and only the third in history.

Former Defence Secretary Dr Liam Fox had been due to attend but decided to stay away following his resignation.

Instead the armed forces delegation was led by Sir Peter Wall, the chief of the general staff. Prime Minister David Cameron also attended the ceremony in Wiltshire.
