The UK's fertility watchdog has
decided today to triple the amount of compensation women receive when
they donate eggs to help infertile couples.
Women currently receive £250 to cover expenses and loss of earnings but this amount can actually leave them out of pocket.
The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority announced today it will raise this to £750 per donation. It will also allow donors to claim additional money for excessive expenses.
Women coming from abroad to donate will receive the same fixed sum but will not receive any travel expenses.
Critics have warned that the increase could change the decision to donate eggs from an altruistic act to a financially motivated one. More
