Trump Issues Minneapolis Ultimatum After Fatal Shooting of Nurse Alex Pretti

In January 2026, the city of Minneapolis became the center of a national crisis. The fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, has triggered a massive clash between federal and state leaders. President Donald Trump has now issued a stern ultimatum to Minnesota officials, while former President Barack Obama has broken his usual silence to condemn the administration's actions.

The Shooting of Alex Pretti

On Saturday, January 24, 2026, federal agents were conducting an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. During the event, agents shot and killed Alex Pretti. Pretti was a well-known ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. He spent his days caring for American veterans.

The federal government claims the shooting was defensive. They stated that Pretti was armed and "violently resisted" when agents tried to disarm him. However, bystander videos tell a different story. The footage appears to show Pretti holding a cell phone, not a gun. He seemed to be trying to protect a woman who had been pushed to the ground by agents. While Pretti was a legal gun owner with a permit to carry, local officials say he was not a threat at the time of his death.

Trump’s "I Don't Like It" Response and Ultimatum

President Trump responded to the incident with a mix of disapproval and a harsh demand. Speaking to reporters and posting on social media, Trump said, "I don't like any shooting. I don't like it." However, he quickly pivoted to blame local leaders for the chaos.

Trump expressed frustration that Pretti was at a protest with a firearm. He questioned why local police were not there to "protect" federal agents. The President then issued a major ultimatum to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. He warned that if state officials do not stop "obstructing" federal agents, he will invoke the Insurrection Act. This would allow him to deploy the U.S. military to the streets of Minneapolis to take control of the situation.

Trump also linked the federal presence to allegations of "massive monetary fraud" in the state. He demanded that Minnesota "turn over" every undocumented immigrant in their jails and prisons immediately.

Obama Issues a Rare Condemnation

The tragedy prompted a rare and powerful statement from Barack Obama. He and Michelle Obama called the killing of Alex Pretti a "heartbreaking tragedy" and a "wake-up call" for the nation.

Obama’s statement was direct. He accused the Trump administration of an "assault" on core American values. He criticized the use of "masked" agents who act without accountability. Obama noted that these tactics are designed to "intimidate and endanger" residents rather than keep them safe.

"Americans expect [agents] to carry out their duties in a lawful, accountable way, and to work with, rather than against, state and local officials," Obama said.

He urged the administration to stop the violence and urged citizens to continue "peaceful protests" to protect their basic freedoms.

A City in Conflict

Minneapolis is currently a city under siege. This is the second fatal shooting of a U.S. citizen by federal agents in the city this month. Earlier in January, Renee Good was also killed during a federal operation. These events have led to daily protests and clashes.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has called for a full, transparent investigation. A federal judge has already stepped in. The judge issued a restraining order to prevent the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from "altering or destroying" any evidence related to the Pretti shooting.
