China jails Aussie for 13 years

Australian businessman Matthew Ng has been sentenced to spend 13 years in a Guangzhou jail, in a shock verdict handed down a moment ago.

The ultra-harsh sentence has devastated Mr Ng's wife, Niki Chow, who had been hoping that her husband would be soon reunited with their three young children in Guangzhou.

It also shocked Mr Ng's legal team, business supporters and Australian officials and raises yet more concerns that China's commercial and legal environments are rapidly deteriorating for foreign and Chinese citizens.

 

“It's particularly shocking because we were not even informed that there would be a verdict before hand,” said Mr Ng's lawyer, Chen Yong.    More Read
